The Old Guard Film Review

Film critic Charlie Vogelsang checks out Netflix's new action movie The Old Guard.

Based on the comic book of the same name, The Old Guard follows a covert team of immortal mercenaries who have fought to protect the mortal world for centuries. As a new member is discovered, they are suddenly exposed and they must fight to keep their identity a secret.

The Old Guard stars Charlize Theron as the leader of the mercenaries who returns to her group after a year-long break. A new job rises up but it’s for a guy they’ve worked for before. Adamant that they never work with someone twice, as it could risk exposing their identity, Theron is persuaded after seeing photos of some innocent victims.

The plot kicks off after the group are set up and their secret is undercovered. On their journey to find the man who betrayed them, they soon discover a woman in their dreams who is a new member and Theron goes to retrieve her.

Despite being a long film, running at just over 2 hours, The Old Guard feels fast-paced and there is little padding. It’s a bit cliche - the antagonist is a classic big business bad guy - but it’s redeemed by the likeable characters. Theron is a proper action star; both charismatic and cool. Her previous roles in Atomic Blonde and Æon Flux make her the perfect actress for this role.

Theron’s crew are just as entertaining, with her latest member, Kiki Layne, putting in a knockout performance. She plays the new member who is unfamiliar with this new power, and it feels genuine. The group dynamic is heartwarming and you can see the comradery built up together after bonding through their mysterious healing powers.

The weakest part of the cast was the typical bad guy, played by Harry Melling. He’s flat and a one-note character that adds little to the film. They try to justify him by preaching that his mission is for science, not profit, but he’s just so unlikeable. He’s the guy you’d love to punch. It would’ve been more effective to keep his identity hidden and let the viewers imagine what he’s like.

One of the best things about the film was the action sequences led by Theron. They are nicely choreographed and are amazing at showing the emotions and thoughts of the characters during scenes, without needing forced exposition. The Old Guard is restricted by the genre in many aspects, but the fight scenes are outstanding and are the standout from the film.

The Old Guard is a fun movie that is definitely worth your watch if you like gritty superhero or action films with heart. It’s not perfect but it’s entertaining enough to warrant a watch. If you’re interested in compelling stories, a fun cast and some excellent fight scenes, then check out The Old Guard.

Score: 7/10.
