5 Reasons Why You Should Play Sims Medieval

The Sims is turning 20, doesn't that make you feel old? Charlie Vogelsang takes a look at the best Sims game you might never have played.

The Sims is known around the world as the most dominant series of life simulation games. You’d have to be living under a rock to have never heard of these games. In 2000, the first ever game was released on Windows, and 20 years later it’s still as popular as ever and has spawned a variety of spin-offs from The Urbz: Sims in the City to MySims. Yet not all spin-offs have got the love they deserve and one in particular needs a bit of love and that game is The Sims Medieval.

Originally released in 2011, The Sims Medieval uses the game engine from The Sims 3 and moves the game to a fictional medieval setting in which the player controls The Watcher who oversees the kingdom and controls certain characters. It completely changes the experience of The Sims, and here are five reasons why you should play it right now.

AN ACTUAL STORY

The Sims is known for its creativity in letting players make their own stories but it can get a little repetitive and sometimes boring. With The Sims Medieval, players have to complete quests and are given actual goals to complete. Each quest is different and has an impact on your kingdom, as some quests improve the well-being meaning that villagers will be healthier whilst some can lower the security meaning bandits are more likely to attack your sims. You’ll be less likely to receive ‘The Sims fatigue’ as the game is constantly changing and there’s never a dull moment.

10 DIFFERENT HEROES TO CONTROL

As you build up your kingdom in The Sims Medieval, you unlock points to buy buildings and create a new player. Starting off as the Monarch to control the kingdom, you can then add Wizards, Spies, Bards and Knights for your kingdom. There are over ten different hero types to unlock and each have unique and interesting abilities plus their own building in the kingdom.

LIVE OUT YOUR GAME OF THRONES FANTASY

As the Monarch, you have control over the kingdom. You can romance everyone in sight and sire many children, or you can be a vindictive ruler who sentences everyone to death. Just be wary that the ruler is not immune, and the rest of the heroes can perform a coup and execute them. Or you can just become the Wizard that you always wanted to be! The choice, as always, is yours.

ROLE-PLAYING MIXED WITH LIFE SIMULATION

Of course the game has life simulation aspects as you have to make sure that the needs of the heroes are fulfilled - but it’s not only hunger and sleep that need to be maintained. The focus of The Sims Medieval is to complete quests and improve the kingdom, as we mentioned earlier. Therefore players will need to duel with bandits and explore unknown islands instead of focusing on their social needs. Each of the heroes can have their own family while completing quests and fulfilling goals. It’s the best of both worlds and adds a more personal twist on role-playing games.

PIRATES AND NOBLES

The base game of The Sims Medieval has endless hours of fun, but the game had one expansion pack called Pirates and Nobles. This expansion pack, which is free in most of the digital editions, allows players to have new quests, new clothes, new objects and treasure hunting mechanics. New NPC pirates are available and you can have your own pet pirate. It’s a fun addition that makes the world even better. Plus, who doesn’t want a game in which you can fight pirates whilst customising your house? Not us, that’s for sure.

The Sims Medieval Deluxe Pack is available on Amazon.
